Vineyard and terroir

The vines average 18 years of age and grow at 300–420 metres above sea level. The soils combine sandy and silty-clay areas with limestone and marl. Dievole lies in the heart of Chianti Classico, around 12 km northeast of Siena, 56 km southeast of Florence and 1 km from Vagliagli. Its 150 hectares of plantings are divided among 16 vineyards, each with a distinct microclimate.

Grapes

Sangiovese is supplemented by small amounts of Canaiolo Nero and Colorino.

Vinification

Harvest generally begins in late September. Fermentation lasts 14–15 days in 75-litre concrete vats at a controlled temperature not exceeding 28 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures for 13 months in 41-hectolitre French oak barrels, followed by three months in the winery’s cellars after bottling.

Vintage notes

The 2019 growing season in Tuscany was very favourable. Summer was warm and dry, while rain in July and August provided sufficient water. September temperatures remained close to seasonal averages. October had little rainfall overall despite frequent rainy days. The resulting wines showed deep colour, excellent aromas, concentration and a refined texture.

Label / history

The wine has been certified organic since the 2017 vintage, and the first Dievole Chianti Classico was released in 1989. The estate takes its name from what is thought to be the phrase Dio vuole, meaning “God wills.” Villa Dievole was built for a noble Tuscan family in the eleventh century, when the Dieulele vineyard was planted in the area; 15 generations of owners have made wine there since then.
