Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in vineyards around Farra d’Isonzo and San Floriano, at elevations of 80–250 m. The Collio hills have Eocene soils composed of layers of sandstone, limestone and clay that once formed part of the ocean floor and contain abundant mineral deposits. Their low permeability causes rainwater to run over the surface, creating small areas of erosion and preventing pooling.
Sea breezes reach the vineyards from the coast, 20 km away, while the nearby Alps cool the grapes after warm, sunny days. These conditions contribute to wines with complexity and structure.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand during the final ten days of September. Cold skin maceration is followed by gentle pressing, after which fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine rests on its lees for several months before bottling.
Label / history
The Felluga family began making wine in Istria at the end of the nineteenth century. In 1920, Giovanni, Marco Felluga’s son, moved the business to Grado, near Collio. After studying oenology in Conegliano, Giovanni’s son and namesake of his grandfather, Marco Felluga, continued the family tradition with an emphasis on research and the combination of traditional and modern methods.
The Marco Felluga estate was founded in 1950 and is based in Gradisca d’Isonzo, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with Gorizia as its administrative centre.
