Storia
Family history brought Michael Schmelzer, who has German-American roots, to Tuscany. He bought Monte Bernardi in 2003 after falling in love with Sangiovese. In 2004 he began farming biodynamically, following the principles of Rudolf Steiner.
Terroir
The vineyards lie on the hills south of Panzano, in the Chianti Classico area. The soils are very stony and vary by location, made up of shale, sandstone or limestone. The vines sit on a south-facing slope at around 350 metres above sea level, surrounded by forest and close to the Pesa River. The estate describes these conditions as together creating a unique microclimate.
Vinificazione
Farming has been biodynamic since 2004, based on the principles of Rudolf Steiner.
Sangiovese is handled with care and a gentle touch.
Filosofia
Michael Schmelzer believes biodynamic farming is the best way to express the terroir. He holds that Sangiovese, handled with care and a gentle touch, can produce wines of the highest quality, and points to the winery's many national and international awards as support.
