Storia
1968: the founding
Poggiotondo began in 1968, when Carlo Antonini, a schoolteacher with a passion for farming and beekeeping, bought an estate that had once belonged to the Conti Guidi. This ancient noble family owned land in Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and gave its name to the village of Cerreto Guidi in the Mediovo region.
Second generation
Carlo passed his love of winegrowing on to his son Alberto, who now works with his wife, Alessandra, to preserve Tuscan winemaking traditions. They live in the main house of Poggiotondo with their children Angelica, Margherita and Carlo.
2014: organic certification
After three years of conversion, the estate received organic certification in 2014.
Terroir
Poggiotondo lies in the heart of Tuscany, between Florence and Pisa, in the Chianti region. The vineyard soils are of marine origin, shown by limestone fossils, including seashells, found throughout the land. They range from sandy to more clay-rich soils. The limestone is described as giving the wines energy and richness.
Vinificazione
The estate follows organic farming principles, growing grapes in a natural, balanced environment. Only organic fertilizers, such as compost, are used, and chemical treatments are strictly prohibited. Organic certification was received in 2014, after three years of conversion.
The principles followed in the vineyards also guide the winemaking. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks and aging in toasted oak barrels. No commercial yeasts or powdered fining agents are used.
Filosofia
The Antoninis aim to make wines with a clear sense of place that can become a symbol of the area. The estate describes its mission as producing outstanding wines that express their terroir, applying the same principles in the vineyards and the cellar.
