Vineyard and terroir
Vigneto San Marcellino covers approximately seven hectares around the Pieve di San Marcellino at Monti in Chianti. Sangiovese predominates, including 1.5 hectares of 50-year-old vines. Pugnitello occupies 0.9 hectares. The wine is made only in distinguished vintages from selected fruit grown in this vineyard.
Grapes
Blend proportions vary by vintage. Latest published vintage (2020): 88% Sangiovese and 12% Pugnitello. Pugnitello has formed at least 5% of the blend since 2006 and contributes colour, structure and aromatic character.
Vinification
For 2020, Sangiovese was picked on 1, 2, 6 and 7 October and Pugnitello on 9 October. Fermentation took place at 26°C. Pugnitello fermented for 12 days; Sangiovese fermented for 19 days followed by another 21 days of maceration. The finished wine was bottled without filtration on 5 July 2023.
Ageing
The general profile describes approximately 24 months in medium-toast Allier oak barriques. The 2020 regime was more detailed: seven months in 56-hL Allier oak vats, 25 months divided between barriques (60%) and tonneaux (40%), and six months in cement tanks. The oak comprised 8% new, 45% three-year-old and 47% four-year-old wood. Bottle maturation in the estate cellar lasted at least 24 months before release.
Technical data
2020: 14.56% alcohol, total acidity 6.56 g/L, volatile acidity 0.60 g/L, pH 3.30, residual sugar 0.36 g/L and total dry extract 31.20 g/L. Free and total sulphur dioxide were respectively 7 and 39 mg/L. Production comprised 13,973 bottles of 750 mL, 350 magnums and 35 three-litre bottles. Certified organic.
Tasting profile
Brilliant ruby in colour. The broad, complex and enveloping bouquet combines raspberry, violet, spice and mineral nuances. The wine has excellent structure, firm yet elegant tannins, harmonious savouriness, fine balance and a long finish.
Serving and pairing
Peak maturity is expected approximately 15–20 years after the vintage.
