Terroir
Roccapesta is based at Località Macereto in Scansano, within Maremma. Its three named single vineyards occupy distinct elevations and soil types: Calestaia lies at 250 m above sea level on clay with a substantial coarse fraction; Vigna Liuzza is at 300 m on clay containing iron-bearing minerals; and I Gaggioli reaches 450 m on clay and schist.
Research into soils, clones and microclimates forms part of Roccapesta’s effort to understand the estate’s growing environment and distinguish the expression of its different sites. The resulting Progetto Morello examines the relationship between Scansano, Sangiovese and the Morellino di Scansano DOCG ecosystem.
Vinificazione
All grapes come exclusively from Roccapesta’s own vineyards, and the vines are tended only by in-house personnel. Vineyard work follows the natural progression of the seasons, reflecting the principle that wine quality is established before the fruit reaches the cellar.
Following harvest, the fruit is selected manually. Material rejected during selection is returned to the land, an approach intended to limit waste. Research into soils, clones and individual microclimates accompanies the practical work in the vineyards.
Roccapesta follows a minimal-intervention approach described as a principle of doing no harm. After harvest, the fruit is selected manually so that only the best grapes continue into production.
Fermentations begin spontaneously and rely on indigenous yeasts. Within Progetto Morello, the three single-vineyard Sangiovese wines ferment in truncated-conical oak vats and mature in 2,500-litre casks. The finished wines are not filtered.
Time is treated as a principal production tool: it allows the wines to clarify, mature and gain depth without forceful intervention. This cellar practice is intended to accompany the natural development of the wine and preserve the individual expression of Sangiovese and its place of origin.
Filosofia
Maremma Sangiovese
Roccapesta’s purpose is to express the character of Maremma Sangiovese through a combination of artisanal work and scientific research. Its stated goal is to interpret a rugged yet generous landscape in wines shaped by identity, ambition and respect. Production decisions are guided by a balance of knowledge, observation and simplicity.
Research and understanding
Research into soils, clones and microclimates is used to deepen the estate’s understanding of its territory and identify the qualities of individual sites. Progetto Morello extends this work into a study of Scansano, Sangiovese and the ecosystem of Morellino di Scansano DOCG. Roccapesta presents the project as its contribution to defining a distinctive and authentic style for a denomination moving from its initial definition toward greater oenological maturity.
Minimum impact
Roccapesta regards wine as a narrator of the land, wind, sun and the people responsible for its creation. Tradition is treated as a means of knowledge and respect for the raw material rather than an imitation of the past. Quality is understood to begin in the vineyard, where each operation follows the natural rhythm of the seasons and culminates in harvest.
In the cellar, the guiding principle is to intervene as little as possible and allow Sangiovese to express its identity without force. Spontaneous fermentation, indigenous yeasts, the absence of filtration and extended reliance on time for clarification and maturation support this approach. The intended result is a faithful, precise and enduring expression of Maremma.
