Vineyard and terroir
This is a single-vineyard wine from the organically farmed Montebello Vineyard No. 7 in Chianti Classico, Tuscany. Its particular slope and exposure, together with clay and galestro, were selected for the quality and purity of their Sangiovese. The technical description specifies silty soil with a substantial presence of stones. Planting was completed by spring 2000 at 7,350 vines per hectare; yield is 60 q/ha. The estate identifies its activity as carbon neutral.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese from a single vineyard.
Vinification
Selection begins in the vineyard and continues at the winery with an optical sorter. The grapes are destemmed, and intact berries are placed immediately in French-oak fermenters. Temperature-controlled alcoholic fermentation includes 40 days of skin contact. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 600 L small casks.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in 25 hL oak casks, including 6 months on the fine lees. Beginning with the 2021 vintage, maturation also includes a further 6 months in concrete tanks.
Technical data
Alcohol is 14%. Production is 15,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Cherry is joined by tobacco, leather, licorice and spice. Elegant tannins balance the fruit, while pronounced acidity supports the wine’s complexity, structure and power. The finish is long and satisfying, emphasizing the Sangiovese’s connection to its site.
Vintage notes
The additional six-month period in concrete was introduced with the 2021 vintage.
Label / history
The first version was the 2008 Tolaini Chianti Classico Riserva. From the 2010 vintage, Gran Selezione replaced the Riserva. It is made only in selected top vintages from Montebello Vineyard No. 7.
