Grapes
Sangiovese, selected for full ripeness.
Vinification
The Riserva originated with the particularly successful 2015 harvest and continued in subsequent years. Only carefully selected Sangiovese is used.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in French oak tonneaux and receives an additional, unspecified period in bottle. The current Italian account refers to four tonneaux and 2,600 bottles; the English narrative for 2018 refers to three tonneaux and approximately 2,000 bottles.
Technical data
DOCG Morellino di Scansano Riserva. The Italian page gives 14% vol., while the English page gives 14.5% vol. Current production is stated as 2,600 bottles, offered in 0.75 L and 1.50 L formats.
Tasting profile
Bright ruby red tending toward garnet. Cherry and mulberry aromas and flavours are joined by caramel, vanilla and cocoa. When young, the wine is taut, with firm tannins balanced by vivid, mouth-watering acidity. Its substantial structure supports both food pairing and cellar development; with time it is expected to become complex, supple, rounded and harmonious.
Serving and pairing
Pair with meat-based dishes. Decanting helps the wine open while young; alternatively, cellar it for several years.
Vintage notes
The first Riserva was made from the 2015 harvest. The English winemaking text describes the 2018 vintage, matured for one year in three French oak tonneaux, with approximately 2,000 bottles produced.
