Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie a few kilometres from the Venica & Venica estate in Friuli Colli Orientali. Schioppettino was grown for centuries exclusively in the Judrio River valley in Prepotto.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in late September when slightly overripe. At the winery, they are sorted and carefully selected, destemmed, then fermented and macerated for 10 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in French barriques, followed by five years in bottle at a constant temperature. This slow maturation allows it to develop full harmony.
Label / history
The wine was first released in 2019 to mark the company’s 90th anniversary. Its label reproduces an extract from the property purchase agreement signed by founder Daniele Venica in 1930.
Historically, Schioppettino was called “Pokalza,” the Slovenian name for Ribolla Nera. The origin of its present name is unknown, although it may derive from the Friulian word “scopp.” This could refer either to the sharp crunch of the ripe grapes’ thick, crisp skins or to the variety’s high acidity, which can prompt secondary fermentation in the bottle and produce carbon dioxide bubbles.
