Vineyard and terroir

Agostino Petri is made from a single vineyard on the Castello Vicchiomaggio estate in Greve in Chianti. The site lies between 220 and 265 m and has heavy soil containing 30% clay. Single Guyot-trained vines are planted at 5,000 per hectare. Yield figures given in the technical description are approximately 45 hl/ha and 40 hl of wine/ha.

Grapes

Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification

Vinification takes place in 50 hl stainless-steel vats, with at least 15 days of skin contact.

Ageing

Maturation begins in second-use barriques previously employed for La Prima Gran Selezione, then continues in large 25–50 hl oak barrels. Total maturation in wood is 18 months, followed by at least 4–6 months in bottle before release.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with garnet highlights. The developed bouquet shows ripe fruit and sweet spices, recalling chocolate-and-strawberry praline and candied cherry. Rounded, soft tannins fill the mouth; the palate is balanced and exceptionally long, with ripe red fruit on the finish. Full bodied and already approachable, it also has substantial ageing potential.

Serving and pairing

Pair with roasted meats and aged cheeses.
