Vineyard and terroir

The Piere plot is in the commune of Mariano del Friuli, at 33 m above sea level. Its soils are rich in clay mixed with gravel, and the vines average 13 years old. This part of the Vie di Romans vineyard has a cooler microclimate. Continental and Adriatic winds shape the local climate, while changeable weather allows the grapes to ripen slowly. The estate uses organic farming methods, without pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

Grapes

Italian Sauvignon Blanc clones account for two-thirds of the cru, with French clones making up the remaining third.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-September, destemmed and gently crushed. A short cold maceration takes place at 8 °C under inert gas, followed by 28 days of fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at 16–19 °C.

Ageing

The wine rests on its lees for seven months in oak barriques and then for 11 months in bottle. Vie di Romans releases its white wines no earlier than two years after harvest.

Tasting profile

Vibrant, complex and mineral, with rich flavours and a long finish.

Serving and pairing

Decanting is not recommended. Pair with fish dishes.

Label / history

Vie di Romans means “road of the Romans”, referring to a road that once crossed the Isonzo River valley and linked Rome with an Adriatic port city. The Gallo family has run the estate for more than a century. Gianfranco Gallo inherited it from his father as a teenager in the 1970s. A long-term winemaking improvement programme begun in the 1980s seeks to create balanced conditions for each vineyard while respecting its individual characteristics.
