About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Grola is tied to Giovanni Allegrini's dream of creating a distinctive wine from La Grola. The vineyard has mixed soils with limestone and clay, is trained to Guyot and sits in one of Valpolicella's most expressive hillside contexts.
Grapes and harvest
The wine is mainly Corvina Veronese, with part Corvinone and a touch of Rondinella. Grapes are hand-harvested with careful vineyard selection in the second half of September.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 20-25 deg C for 15 days, using gentle extraction.
Ageing
The wine ages for 16 months: 50% in second-use barriques and 50% in large 85-hl casks. It then ages 10 months in bottle before release.
Technical data
Vintage 2023. Alcohol 13.36% vol. Total acidity 5.65 g/l. Residual sugar 1.8 g/l. Dry extract 30.7 g/l. pH 3.41. Formats include 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L.
Tasting profile
Grola combines tannic structure, freshness and ripe fruit. Aromas include blackberries, cherries, violets, vanilla, tobacco and dark chocolate. The palate is velvety, with mature tannins and a long finish of red and black fruits.
Vintage notes and pairing
The 2023 harvest was challenging, with below-average temperatures, frequent rainstorms, disease pressure and August heat. Careful canopy management, trimming and green harvesting helped bring grapes to ripeness. Pairings include lasagna alla Bolognese, stewed mushrooms, aged non-spicy cheeses and slow-cooked meats.
