History

Foundation and the Prosecco project

Giancarlo Aneri founded his wine company in November 1997. He approached the venture as a defined commercial project, beginning with Prosecco: a fresh, fragrant and versatile wine that he regarded as distinctly Italian and closely associated with a delimited area near Venice. The new business combined limited production and a quality-first policy with marketing directed personally by its founder.

The company subsequently came to control production from three Prosecco-growing farms: Eden at Susegana, Barro at Conegliano Veneto and Tiepolo at Valdobbiadene. Its Prosecco was selected for the centenary celebration of Juventus F.C. and for celebrations connected with the installations of Italian presidents Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Giorgio Napolitano, as well as the elections of United States presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump.

Expansion beyond Prosecco

After the initial Prosecco project became established, the range expanded to Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, the organic Prosecco ANERI N.7 Leone and, above all, Amarone. The family became part of the identity of the range: N.1, N.3 and N.5 were dedicated respectively to Giancarlo Aneri’s granddaughters Lucrezia, Giorgia and Ludovica; the organic N.7 was dedicated to his grandson Leone; Pinot Bianco Leda took the name of his wife; Pinot Nero Ale referred to Alessandro; and Amarone Stella bore Stella’s name.

The company also developed a bespoke Amarone-barrel program in its Fumane cellar. The facility was arranged with 48 oak barrels of 100 litres each. Individual barrels were assigned to selected clients, who could follow maturation through a cellar webcam and receive bottles from successive vintages. MSC Crociere selected barrels associated with ships in its fleet.

2004 — European Constitution

On 29 April 2004, the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers presented Aneri Amarone to the 25 European prime ministers attending the signing of the European Constitution in Rome. Personalized packaging and labels subsequently became an important element of the company’s institutional commissions.

2009 — G8 in L’Aquila

At the July 2009 G8 summit in L’Aquila, each participating head of state or government, together with the President of the European Commission, received a personalized magnum of 2003 Aneri Amarone. The bottles were placed in wooden cases engraved with stylized initials. The choice of a long-lived wine was presented as a symbol of hope and long-term prosperity.

2019 — recognition for Amarone

At the second Food and Travel Italia Awards, held at Forte Village Resort in Sardinia, Giancarlo and Alessandro Aneri received the award naming Amarone Aneri Stella the red wine of the year. The recognition highlighted the company’s continuing emphasis on quality and careful selection from Valpolicella Classica.

2021 — G20 in Rome

For the 2021 G20 summit in Rome, the Italian presidency commissioned personalized gifts for heads of state, heads of government and leaders of international organizations. Recipients included Joseph Biden Jr., Vladimir Putin, Emmanuel Macron, Xi Jinping, Ursula von der Leyen, Angela Merkel, Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau, António Guterres, Queen Máxima and Prince Charles. The gifts centred on magnums of Aneri Amarone with individualized labels. Guests for whom alcohol was inappropriate instead received personalized packages containing Aneri extra-virgin olive oil from the Ligurian Riviera and Aneri coffee. Giancarlo Aneri and his children personally transported the gifts from Legnago to Palazzo Chigi, while members of the family applied the labels by hand.

The new Cantina Aneri

A new Cantina Aneri was established at San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of the production area for classic Amarone. The development reinforced the company’s physical presence in Valpolicella alongside the dedicated barrel cellar at Fumane.

2025 — new public commissions and partnership

A personalized magnum of Aneri Amarone was presented by Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez for their wedding in Venice. Its label was designed by Mimmo Paladino; another bottle bearing the same design had been presented by Pope Francis to King Charles and Queen Camilla earlier that year.

On 1 December 2025, ITA Airways unveiled the renovated Hangar Lounge in Terminal 1 at Rome Fiumicino Airport and announced Aneri as a partner. Aneri products were selected for service in lounges and aboard flights as part of the airline’s program devoted to Italian hospitality, style and culture.

November 1997Giancarlo Aneri founded the wine company, initially building the project around Prosecco and a policy of high quality in limited quantities.
After 1997The range expanded to Pinot Bianco, Pinot Nero, organic Prosecco ANERI N.7 Leone and Amarone Stella; production from the Eden, Barro and Tiepolo Prosecco farms came under company control.

Terroir

Valpolicella Classica

Cantina Aneri stands at San Pietro in Cariano, in the heart of the classic Amarone production area. Grapes for Amarone are selected from particularly suitable parts of Valpolicella Classica. A separate bespoke-barrel cellar is located at Fumane.

Conegliano–Valdobbiadene

The Prosecco holdings and sources extend through the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The landscape is described as rolling, steep and, around Barro, terraced. The Prosecco Brut vineyards occupy the steep hills at the centre of the DOCG area, while the DOC wines draw on the central-western hills of Alta Marca Trevigiana.

Eden, at Susegana, covers approximately 50 ha, of which 17 ha are planted to vines. Its soils are predominantly clay over marl of glacial origin. Prosecco vines occupy the southern exposures, while pasture and century-old oak woods cover the remainder. Historically, only the best sunny positions were planted.

Barro lies beside the castle of Conegliano on a steep, terraced hillside. Tiepolo is associated with Valdobbiadene and with the fruit used for ANERI N.5.

Asolo

The organic ANERI N.7 Leone originates in the high hills of Asolo. The defining conditions are pronounced day–night temperature changes, good ventilation and mineral-rich ground. These conditions are associated with grapes capable of producing greater structure.

Alto Adige

The white and red Alto Adige projects are linked to selected vineyards at Cornaiano. The available description emphasizes harmony and freshness but provides no parcel-specific geological, climatic or elevation data.

Winemaking

Hand harvestBunches for Prosecco Superiore Brut are delicately harvested by hand.
Gentle pressingProsecco production begins with soft pressing before white-wine vinification.
Charmat methodSecondary fermentation for Prosecco takes place in large pressure tanks; the DOC tank phase lasts about 40 days.
Cement fermentationAmarone ferments in cement tanks for about 50–60 days without temperature control or biotechnological aids.
Extended oak maturationAmarone matures for at least 48 months in small- and medium-capacity oak barrels.
Bespoke barrelsThe Fumane cellar contains 48 individually allocated 100-litre oak barrels with webcam monitoring.

Production is controlled across three Prosecco vine farms: Eden, Barro and Tiepolo. At Eden, the best sunny positions have historically been reserved for vines, and the south-facing slopes carry the Prosecco plantings. Cultivation follows methods refined through local tradition. The coexistence of 17 ha of vines with pasture and century-old oak woodland gives the farm a mixed agricultural and wooded landscape.

Barro’s vines are cultivated on steep terraces beside the castle of Conegliano. Its approach is described in terms of compatibility with, and respect for, both the environment and consumers. The Prosecco Superiore Brut documentation specifies delicate hand harvesting of the bunches.

The organic ANERI N.7 Leone project uses Glera from the Asolo hills. The decision to produce an organic wine is tied to the principles of quality, authenticity, consumer health and environmental protection. This organic claim applies to the named N.7 production rather than to the complete portfolio.

Fruit selection is an explicit part of production. The Prosecco DOC wines use carefully selected grapes from the best years in the central-western Alta Marca Trevigiana, while Amarone draws on selected fruit from suitable areas of Valpolicella Classica.

Prosecco Superiore DOCG

The documented process begins with gentle pressing, followed by white-wine vinification and secondary fermentation in large vessels. The Brut is produced by the Charmat method. One technical presentation specifies six months in large stainless-steel vessels followed by approximately six months in bottle. The bunches for the Prosecco Superiore Brut are hand-picked.

Prosecco DOC

Selected grapes are pressed and the must undergoes a temperature-controlled first alcoholic fermentation. The detailed Extra Dry specification gives a range of 16–18°C. Secondary alcoholic fermentation takes place in pressure tanks or autoclaves to form the mousse; the tank phase lasts about 40 days. The millesimato version is made in limited quantities from a single, particularly favourable vintage.

Amarone

The documented Amarone blend combines Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, Croatina and Sangiovese. The grapes are vinified together in cement tanks for approximately 50–60 days without temperature control or biotechnological aids. Extraction work alternates pumping over in contact with air, délestage and punching down. Maturation lasts at least 48 months in small- and medium-capacity oak barrels, after which the wine is bottled as a single lot.

The Fumane cellar also houses the personalized Amarone program: 48 oak barrels of 100 litres, allocated individually to selected clients. Barrel owners can monitor maturation through a webcam.

Alto Adige red-wine maturation

The Pinot Nero-based Ale project matures for 15 months in oak barrels.

Philosophy

Cantina Aneri’s guiding principle is the production of premium-quality wine in deliberately limited quantities. Giancarlo Aneri links quality to respect for the traditions of the land, the vines and convivial living, while treating a clearly defined commercial project and confidence in the product as essential to building a recognizable Italian brand.

Family is central to both company life and presentation. The wines and controlled farms carry the names of Giancarlo Aneri’s wife, children and grandchildren, turning the range into a record of family relationships. The family lives in the same building in Legnago, and Sunday lunches also function as informal company meetings. Giancarlo Aneri’s stated aim is to leave his descendants a business that speaks about the family and has been built collectively.

The organic N.7 project expresses a more specific environmental position: organic production is associated with quality and authenticity, protection of consumer health, and respect for the environment. In the Amarone program, tradition is expressed through the avoidance of biotechnological aids, long maturation and an emphasis on the historical development of Valpolicella wine.
