About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Castelletto vineyard in the commune of Monforte d’Alba, at the southeastern edge of the Barolo zone. Its limestone- and mineral-rich clay marl soils are interspersed with sandier layers. The limestone and clay contribute firm structure and pronounced tannins, while the looser sandy sections add aromatic intensity. The high-elevation site has east and southeast exposures and a relatively cool microclimate, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and transported to the cellar in small 20 kg crates to preserve the berries intact. After destemming, the must moves by gravity into open French oak vats for alcoholic fermentation. Maceration includes daily gentle pump-overs and punch-downs, with temperature control to prevent excessive heat. Malolactic fermentation takes place in large French oak casks. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
Ageing
The wine remains in large French oak casks for 20–33 months, depending on the vintage, followed by at least nine months in bottle. This maturation softens the tannins and integrates the fruit, spice, floral and mineral notes.
Tasting profile
Restrained, focused and elegant, with aromas of red berries, flowers, spices and herbs. The palate is linear and fresh, showing noticeable acidity, firm tannins and a taut, expressive mineral character. The elements come together in a balanced whole.
Serving and pairing
Pair with braised meat, game or aged cheese.
Vintage notes
In 2021, a snowy winter was followed by a warm, dry summer without prolonged extreme heat. Cool nights enabled gradual ripening while preserving acidity and aromatic freshness. The vintage combined power with coolness.
