Franco Ziliani’s Bolgheri project
Oenologist Franco Ziliani opened a new winemaking chapter at Caccia al Piano along the Via Bolgherese, a road running through vineyards and olive groves in Castagneto Carducci. The estate developed a portfolio spanning Bolgheri reds, white wine and a traditional-method sparkling rosé.
Caccia al Piano’s legal entity is Caccia al Piano 1868 Società Agricola s.r.l. It operates within the group coordinated by Guido Berlucchi & C. S.p.A.
Public appearances and subsequent development
In November 2014, Tenuta Caccia al Piano took part in the Merano WineFestival with its own stand in the Lentner Saal. The estate presented two vintages of Levia Gravia Bolgheri Superiore DOC—2004 and 2009—alongside Ruit Hora 2011 Bolgheri Rosso DOC.
The range subsequently expanded beyond the red wines documented in the older English-language profile. Its current presentation encompasses approximately 140,000 bottles per year and includes reds based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot, as well as whites based on Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc. The portfolio comprises Caccia al Piano, Ruit Hora, Lungocosta, Cap Rosè and the three-wine Grottaia range.
In August 2023, the estate’s Caccia al Piano 2020 Bolgheri Superiore received the DoctorWine Face and a score of 95/100 in the 2024 edition of Daniele Cernilli’s guide.
Terroir
Caccia al Piano occupies a 30 ha estate in Castagneto Carducci, within the Bolgheri growing area of Tuscany. The property lies along the Via Bolgherese, a landscape of vineyards and olive groves. Its wines are linked to the local combination of microclimate and soil, although individual soil types, geological formations, elevations and exposures are not specified.
Winemaking
Annual production is approximately 140,000 bottles. The estate makes red wines from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot, together with white wines based on Vermentino and Sauvignon Blanc. Its portfolio also includes Cap Rosè, described as the first application of the traditional method to the Bolgheri territory. No further cellar, fermentation, maturation or bottling protocols are defined.
Philosophy
The project initiated by Franco Ziliani is oriented toward wines intended to make a lasting impression. Its red wines are characterised in terms of structure, balance and longevity, while the expanded portfolio combines established Bolgheri reds with white wine and traditional-method sparkling production.
