About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from a 2 ha estate vineyard at Casanuova di Pietrafitta in Castellina in Chianti. The site has a north-eastern exposure and lies at 580 m above sea level. Alberese is predominant, accompanied by calcareous-clay layers; the vineyard data also characterize the soil as medium-textured and rich in sand and rock fragments. These conditions contribute depth, savoriness and elegance.

The vineyard is planted at 5,000 vines per hectare and spur-pruned. Vine age is given as 25 and 50 years. Part of the Gran Selezione comes from vines planted in the 1970s, now more than 50 years old. These mature, deeply rooted vines give naturally low yields—approximately 1 kg per plant—and concentrated grapes. Harvest takes place in mid-October.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese, specifically the Sangiovese Grosso clone identified as the Montalcino biotype.

Vinification

Maceration lasts 12–20 days in steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28°C, using native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation takes place in steel.

Ageing

The wine matures for 15 months in tonneaux, then for a further 6 months in 23 and 32 hl barrels. Bottle ageing lasts at least 12 months.

Technical data

The wine is stabilized only by natural methods and receives only very wide filtration. Natural sediment may therefore develop after extended bottle ageing without affecting its sensory qualities.

Tasting profile

The aromatic profile combines small red berries and Marasca cherries preserved in alcohol with chocolate-berry nuances and integrated woody notes. The palate is full-bodied, warm and powerful, with a pronounced tannic texture balanced by elegance and drinkability. Acidity and minerality sustain a fresh, long finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C. Pair with stewed meat, game or mature cheeses.

Label / history

Effe'55 expresses the Capraia selection from Castellina in Chianti. Capraia grapes have been vinified and aged separately from Rocca di Castagnoli’s other production for decades. The project began from recognition, as early as 1988, of the differences between the terroirs of Castellina and Gaiole. Vineyards acquired in Pietrafitta in 2018 were dedicated to selected Chianti Classico wines, including Riserva and Gran Selezione Effe'55; their higher, cooler and better-ventilated setting helps preserve phenological ripening during increasingly frequent periods of summer heat.
