About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is hand-picked from the estate's best plots. Collefrisio farms 35 hectares in three vineyards in the hills of Abruzzo, with sea breezes and nearby mountains creating the growing conditions. The three are:
- Tenuta Valle del Moro: 12 ha in the Moro Valley, with Montepulciano and Trebbiano on well-drained, stony limestone soils. The valley stretches from the Majella mountain range to the coast.
- Tenuta Morrecine: 12 ha on stony soil between the hills of Ortona and Tollo, overlooking the sea, with the same varieties.
- Tenuta Giuliano Teatino: 11 ha on the slopes of the Majella, closer to the Venna River valley, with Montepulciano and Pecorino on red clay soils.
The text does not say which vineyard or plots supply this wine. Farming is organic, with no chemical treatments, and harvest begins only when the grapes are fully ripe.
Vinification
The grapes are 100% Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, hand-picked in late October. They macerate on the skins for an extended 15–20 days. Fermentation is temperature-controlled.
Ageing
After fermentation, part of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and the rest in oak barrels. The cellars are built entirely underground, beneath a vineyard that had been uprooted, which keeps temperatures low. Some areas are air-conditioned to balance temperature and humidity.
Tasting profile
Full-bodied, velvety and elegant. The structure is rich and harmonious, with expressive fruit and a subtle spicy, woody background. The wine is generous and layered, and shows the purity and distinctive character of its terroir.
Vintage notes
The text names the 2021 vintage but gives no information on its weather.
Label / history
"Vignaquadra" is a range of four organic wines: Pecorino, Falanghina, Montepulciano and Passerina. The labels show a stylized overhead view of the vineyards around Tenute Madre, and the striped capsule echoes the straight rows of vines. The wine carries an ICEA organic certificate (IT-BIO-006.380-0005218.2024.002). Collefrisio is run by two young members of the third generation of winemakers, and its philosophy is organic winemaking.
