About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Castellero is a historic cru in the commune of Barolo. The small vineyard lies at 280 m, with vines around 30 years old. Its well-drained, Tortonian-origin soils consist of marl with tuff and a high proportion of sand. The site produces aromatic, graceful and approachable wines.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in the first half of October and fully destemmed. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in steel vats for 40 days without cultured yeast, following the estate’s traditional approach.

Ageing

The wine rests for about six months in steel tanks, followed by 30 months in large 20–25 hl Slavonian oak casks. This maturation softens the tannins while preserving the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.

Tasting profile

Deep and refined, with classic Barolo character, the wine combines power and elegance. It shows aromas of roses, red berries, liquorice and spices, developing notes of leather, tobacco and dried herbs over time. Its acidity and structured tannins support further development. The 2022 is open and approachable in its youth while remaining balanced.

Serving and pairing

Pair with meat dishes.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing season was very warm and dry. The mature vines and the vineyard’s particular conditions helped preserve the wine’s balance.
