About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from the family-owned Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. The site covers more than 6 hectares at an altitude of 280 metres and has a south-westerly exposure. Its limestone soils contain blue-grey marl of marine origin from the Miocene epoch of the Tertiary period. Monprivato was first documented in 1666.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand in mid-October and carefully selected. Traditional fermentation takes place in contact with the skins for 20–25 days.

Ageing

The wine matures for approximately 38 months in Slavonian oak casks. It gains complexity and richness of character with age.

Tasting profile

Complex and elegant.

Label / history

Giuseppe Mascarello initially managed vineyards belonging to Marchioness Giulia Colbert Faletti di Barolo at the Manescotto estate. In 1881, he acquired vineyards and cellars in Monforte d'Alba.

His son Maurizio Mascarello bought a farm and a parcel in the Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto in 1904 and transferred the family business there. In 1921, he moved the estate to a historic 18th-century building in Monchiero, where it remains.

Following Maurizio's death in 1923, his sons Giuseppe and Natale divided the company and vineyards. Giuseppe's son Mauro assumed control in 1967 and reunited the business by purchasing Natale's vineyard holdings after Natale died in 1979. Mauro represents the family's fourth generation.
