About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the Santo Stefano vineyard in Perno, whose soils are rich in iron. The vines are thinned during summer so that selected bunches can ripen by autumn.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand during the first two weeks of October. Fruit from each vineyard is vinified separately to preserve its individual character. Traditional fermentation lasts 15–20 days. A sorting table is used to select the best bunches.
Ageing
The wine matures for 36 months in medium-toast oak barrels.
Tasting profile
It has an intense aroma and a distinctive character, becoming more complex and richer with maturation.
Label / history
Each bottle label bears a number identifying the vineyard and its place of origin. The Giuseppe Mascarello family company has made wine for more than a century and a half. Giuseppe Mascarello began his career managing the vineyards of Marchesa Giulia Colbert Falletti di Barolo and established his own winery toward the end of the 19th century. His son Maurizio left the building-materials trade to take over the family company in 1923. Giuseppe’s grandson Mauro continued the family winemaking tradition from 1967 and introduced a sorting table at the winery in response to developments in wine production. Mauro’s son Giuseppe joined the business in 1996, focusing on promoting the company, while Mauro’s wife, Maria Teresa, also became part of the family enterprise. The winery combines its family traditions with selected scientific and technological advances.
