About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from different Nebbiolo micro-plots in the highest portion of Bricco di Treiso. Treiso was the first village where the Pio family began acquiring vineyards, starting in 1974. “Il Bricco” means “peak of the hill” in Italian.

Bricco di Treiso has a cooler, windier microclimate, steep slopes, and soils composed of clay and compact marls.

Grapes

Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, accompanied by a long maceration on the skins.

Ageing

The wine ages for nearly 24 months in large barrels made from French and Eastern European oak. A small portion is also matured in French oak barriques. A long period of bottle ageing precedes release and is intended to make the wine more approachable in its youth.

Tasting profile

Powerful, structured tannins frame concentrated, intense and spicy fruit. Pronounced acidity provides balance. The wine has extremely long ageing potential.

Label / history

First produced from the 1990 vintage, Barbaresco “Il Bricco” was created to express the distinctive character of Bricco di Treiso. It has been made in very limited quantities every year since that inaugural vintage.
