About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from very old Nebbiolo vines in the historic portion of the Mosconi appellation in Monforte d’Alba. The Pio family completed its acquisition of these vineyards in 2014. Their high elevation and calcareous, marly soils shape the wine’s character.

Grapes

Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by a long maceration on the skins.

Ageing

The wine matures for nearly 24 months in large barrels made from French and Eastern European oak. A small portion is aged in French oak barriques. Extended bottle ageing precedes release and is intended to make the wine more approachable in its youth.

Tasting profile

Power derived from the calcareous and marly soils is balanced by soft, harmonious tannins. The aromatic profile combines spicy and floral notes with delicate, charming tones associated with the vineyard’s high elevation. The wine has long ageing potential.

Label / history

The Pio family completed the acquisition of vineyards in the historic Mosconi area in 2014. Barolo Mosconi debuted with the 2015 vintage, 30 years after the first release of Barolo Ornato, and has been made annually in very small quantities since then.
