About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine combines Nebbiolo from nine family-owned vineyards distributed across the Barolo region. The Serralunga d’Alba component comes from Ornato, Briccolina, Serra and Lirano; Monforte d’Alba contributes Mosconi; Novello contributes Ravera; La Morra contributes Roncaglie; and the Grinzane Cavour fruit comes from Gustava and Garretti.
The blend brings together vineyards with different positions and exposures, expressing the varied character of Nebbiolo across the appellation in the traditional Langhe approach.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks, followed by a long maceration on the skins. The separate vineyard components are then carefully assembled into the final blend.
Ageing
The wine matures for nearly 24 months in large barrels made from French and Eastern European oak. A small portion is aged for a limited period in French oak barriques. Extended bottle ageing follows before release, enhancing the wine’s approachability while young.
Tasting profile
Structured, incisive tannins are balanced by finesse. Ripe, spicy red-fruit notes lead into a persistent finish.
Label / history
Produced every year in the Pio family style since 1881. Rather than presenting a single site, Barolo “Pio” unites multiple Barolo terroirs to capture their diverse expressions as a complete and balanced whole.
