About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Riserva draws on two estate-owned plots. Le Prata lies at 507 metres above sea level with a south-western exposure, while La Torre is situated at 420 metres and faces south-east. The plots are vinified and aged separately, then brought together for bottling. Vines are Guyot-trained at a density of 5,952 plants per hectare, with yields of 55–60 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

100% certified-organic Sangiovese.

Vinification

The two vineyard lots undergo separate, long spontaneous fermentations.

Ageing

The 2019 Riserva matured for approximately 50 months in a single 30 hl barrel. After their separate vinification and maturation, the two lots were combined for bottling.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14.50% vol. Production comprised 3,500 bottles of 0.75 l, 300 jeroboams and five special rehoboams. Listed commercial formats are 0.75 l, 1.5 l and 3 l.

Tasting profile

Brilliant royal-garnet red. The fine, elegant bouquet combines dried flowers, small red berries, undergrowth, spices, liquorice and balsamic herbs. Full and savoury on the palate, with considerable length, intensity and breadth. A precise tannic structure provides balance, leading to an exceptionally persistent, fruit-driven finish.

Vintage notes

The 2019 growing season was climatically variable. The first half of spring was warmer and drier than the seasonal average, followed by frequent rain in May that built water reserves ahead of a very hot summer. Pronounced temperature variation in the vineyards, well-distributed rainfall and favourable harvest conditions supported excellent grape ripening.

The 2019 is the estate’s fifth Brunello di Montalcino Riserva release. Riserva selection begins in the vineyard when particular fruit displays a distinct character considered suitable for the designation.
