About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Riserva brings together Sangiovese from high-altitude estate vineyards in Greve in Chianti, including Ruffoli and Lamole, and Radda in Chianti. The sites extend from approximately 350 m to almost 700 m above sea level and are vinified separately to retain their individual character before blending.

In Ruffoli, the vineyards rise from 350–400 m to around 550 m. Sandstone-derived galestro contains more clay on the lower slopes, contributing additional weight and depth, while the higher sites have lighter, more skeletal and freely draining soils associated with elegance and structure. Lamole lies close to 700 m and combines predominantly sandy soils with clay and schist; its fruit contributes lightness, aromatic lift, and refined structure. Radda, at approximately 450 m, is cooler and rockier, with abundant galestro slate, regular airflow, and pronounced day–night temperature variation. It produces darker fruit profiles, vibrant acidity, persistent yet finely structured tannins, and strong capacity for ageing.

The vineyards are managed through sustainable organic practices, with each site treated individually to maintain environmental balance. The wine is certified organic and vegan.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese. The final wine is assembled from the best individual vineyard lots, creating a multifaceted expression of the variety rather than emphasizing a single site.

Vinification

Each parcel is harvested and fermented separately, lot by lot. This micro-vinification approach preserves the distinctions among the vineyards. After maturation, only the best lots are selected and assembled into the final blend.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 16 months in fine- to extra-fine-grained French oak barriques of 225 L and tonneaux of 500 L. New oak accounts for no more than 20%. The completed blend then ages in bottle for at least another year.

Technical data

For the 2021 vintage, the harvest ran from 1 to 21 October. Average wine yield is 30 hL/ha. Alcohol is 14% vol., pH 3.30, total acidity 6.42 g/L, and residual sugar below 1.0 g/L. Production was approximately 22,300 bottles.

Available formats are 750 mL in six-bottle cases and 1.5 L Magnum, 3 L Double Magnum, and 6 L Imperial bottles, with each large format packed in an individual wooden case.

Tasting profile

Concentrated and vibrant, the Riserva combines a substantial body and pronounced structural elements with complexity, finesse, and drinkability. The component vineyards contribute contrasting dimensions: elegance and subtle weight from Ruffoli, aromatic lift from Lamole, and darker fruit, vibrant acidity, and finely shaped tannins from Radda. The assembled wine is designed to express precision, depth, balance, harmony, and enduring character.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 14–18 °C. Its body, concentration, acidity, and structure suit dishes that allow the wine’s complexity to remain prominent. Suggested pairings include red-wine risotto; pumpkin tart with caramelized onions and vegan ricotta; vegan eggplant parmigiana; braised cannellini beans with escarole and sausages; Tuscan ribollita; and gnocchi with sage and cashew-nut sauce.

The wine can be enjoyed young, develops greater complexity five to six years after harvest, and may continue evolving for at least a further fifteen years.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began with an unusually mild winter and warm, dry weather in February and March, prompting early budbreak. April frost reduced yields. The remainder of spring was more typical, with sufficient rain in May. Hot, dry summer weather slowed grape development, but there were no heat spikes comparable to the preceding year. Rain at the end of August and in mid-September, followed by sunny conditions, allowed an extended, even ripening period and a harvest timed for optimal maturity. The resulting wines combine complexity and finesse.

The 2022 release is characterized by precision, depth, and enduring character.

Label / history

The modern Riserva began with the 2011 vintage, released in 2014. Earlier versions had been made selectively in particularly strong vintages through 1999, after which production paused until the new interpretation was introduced. Subsequent vintages have emphasized concentration, balance, and harmony through detailed site selection and separate vinification of vineyard lots.
