About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from old vines in Roagna’s plot within the Montefico geographical mention, one of Barbaresco’s historic vineyards. The family purchased the 0.24 ha parcel in 1929, and Montefico is the vineyard it has vinified for the longest period.
The small triangular plot lies halfway up the hill, in the centre of the amphitheatre facing the village of Neive. It has a south-eastern exposure and stands at 230 m above sea level. The soils are of Tertiary, or Cenozoic, origin, formed through marine sedimentation approximately 70 million years ago. This north-western sector of Barbaresco has a calcareous clay subsoil with a significant presence of marl.
Montefico takes its name from the Piedmontese expression “mont der fi”, historically used for parcels planted with vines.
Grapes
Nebbiolo from old, massal-origin vines. The Vecchie Viti selection is drawn from vines more than 50–60 years old; some of the Nebbiolo plants in Montefico have stood there since shortly after the advent of phylloxera. Their developed root systems explore numerous soil layers for water and nutrients.
Ageing
The wines in the Crichët Pajé and Vecchie Viti range mature for an average of five years in wood and concrete.
Technical data
Annual production is approximately 1,000 bottles. The precise number produced is recorded on the bottle label.
