About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
A small selection from old vines in Pajé, a historic vineyard in the centre of Barbaresco owned by the Roagna family since 1953. The site forms a gently sloping natural amphitheatre at an average elevation of 230 m. Its south and south-west exposures are protected from wind by surrounding hills, while the opening toward the Tanaro valley moderates winter cold and summer heat.
The soils are calcareous marl with a high proportion of active limestone. They originated through marine sedimentation during the Tertiary period, approximately 70 million years ago. Pajé contains 1.83 ha of Nebbiolo, with Dolcetto planted in the lower section, and the vines average more than 50 years of age.
Grapes
Nebbiolo from old vines.
Vinification
Submerged-cap maceration lasts 80–90 days.
Ageing
Very long maturation takes place in oak casks, concrete and ceramic. The Pajé selection remains in the cellar for at least an additional decade before release.
