About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Barolo Riserva is assembled from selected plots in different MGA vineyards. These parcels are vinified and aged separately before the final blend. The first release used fruit from Guyot-trained vines between 25 and 45 years old, planted at an average density of approximately 4,500 vines per hectare. The tannic character is associated with Serralunga.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand. The current technical sheet describes partial whole-grape vinification. The remaining fruit is destemmed and crushed, then transferred to stainless-steel tanks for maceration and alcoholic fermentation. Following several days of cold pre-fermentation maceration, the temperature is raised and fermentation continues for approximately 20 days with regular pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood.

Ageing

The current technical sheet specifies approximately 24 months in large oak barrels. The main wine page describes approximately 30 months in large casks.

Technical data

The first release comprised 5,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

The current profile presents an intense ruby-red wine with ripe small red fruits, balsamic tones and citrus nuances. It is medium-bodied, rich, full and elegant, with well-integrated tannins, a sweet-toned finish and vibrant acidity that adds depth.

The profile on the main wine page is broader and darker: medium-intense ruby red, with woodland underbrush, cherry, blackberry, prune and fig, complemented by balsamic nuances. The palate is medium-bodied, rich and powerful; integrated tannins and lively acidity provide balance, depth and a long aftertaste.

Label / history

The wine emerged from repeated vineyard and cellar trials conducted while selecting fruit for Barolo Castiglione. Certain high-quality parcels showed a compelling combination of intensity, elegance and tannic structure, leading Vietti to bottle them separately as a “selection within the selection.”
