14 cantine, 17 vini e 4 denominazioni. Molise is Italy's second-smallest region after Valle d'Aosta, both in area and in population. It lies on the Adriatic between Abruzzo and Puglia, running inland from a short stretch of coast into the Apennines, with Campobasso as its capital. Denominazioni del Molise
Molise in breve
It is still little known to visitors and to the wine world, with just 5,430 hectares under vine. But its output has been climbing, and in 2022 it made a record 513,000 hectolitres, mostly table wine and more than 70 per cent red. Montepulciano is the dominant grape with 51 per cent of the vineyards, followed by Trebbiano at 12.
Molise has no DOCG. Its four DOCs are Biferno, named after the region's main river, Pentro di Isernia in the mountainous west, Molise, and Tintilia del Molise, dedicated to Tintilia, the native red grape the region has adopted as its own. Two IGPs cover the rest.
