La Tordera

Origins

The winery is named after the hill of La Tordera, in the heart of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG area. On this hill a net was once set up to catch thrushes, birds that arrived in the vineyards every autumn and caused significant damage to the crop. The thrush later became the winery's emblem, and its silhouette now appears on every label.

Current generation

Today the family-run winery is led by Petro Vettoretti, the founder's grandson. His elder son, Renato, looks after the vineyards, while his younger son, Paolo, works as the winery's oenologist.

2001

A new winery was built, incorporating many wooden structures designed to reduce heat transfer between the building and the outdoors.

The winery stands in Vidor, in the province of Treviso, at the heart of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG area. The hill of La Tordera, after which the winery is named, is where a net was once used to catch thrushes that came to the vineyards each autumn.

All grapes are harvested by hand. The proximity of the vineyards to the winery helps keep the use of SO2 to a minimum.

The new winery, built in 2001, includes many wooden structures that reduce heat transfer between the building and the outdoors. Solar panels on the winery roof generate a significant share of its electricity. Bottles are made from recycled materials and weigh just 700 g, and boxes are also made from recycled paper.

The winery keeps grape growing and winemaking close together, harvesting all grapes by hand and relying on the proximity of vineyards to the cellar to keep sulfur dioxide use to a minimum. Sustainability extends to the winery building itself, built in 2001 with wooden structures to reduce heat transfer, solar panels for electricity, and packaging — lightweight recycled-material bottles and recycled paper boxes.
