Vineyard and terroir
Sangiovese is selected from the estate’s finest vineyards at San Felice, Castelnuovo Berardenga, in Siena. The medium-textured, structurally rich soils are dominated by clay of calcareous-marly origin produced by the breakdown of alberese and galestro. Vines are trained to spur-pruned cordon and Guyot.
Grapes
Sangiovese and other indigenous varieties.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 28–30°C, with 22 days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
The wine ages in wood for 24 months, including refinement in 500 L French-oak tonneaux, followed by eight months in bottle.
Technical data
The 2022 has 14% alcohol, total acidity of 5.7 g/L and less than 0.5 g/L residual sugar. Production totals 13,000 bottles, offered in 0.75 L and 1.5 L formats. Cellaring potential is 10–15 years.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red in color, with broad, persistent aromas. Violet and blackcurrant mingle with sweetly spicy tobacco and licorice. The palate is full-bodied, smooth and well structured, with ripe, juicy tannins in harmony with the wine’s acidity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. Pair with game, roasts, grilled dishes or cheeses.
Vintage notes
The 2022 season passed without extreme weather, creating favorable conditions for vine development. Mid-August rain tempered the high summer temperatures and helped the grapes reach optimal ripeness. The Sangiovese harvest started slightly early, around 10 September, and was completed smoothly over approximately one month.
Label / history
La Pieve was created as an expression of San Felice’s Chianti Classico terroir through native grape varieties.
