Vineyard and terroir
The organically managed vineyard is located in Roseto degli Abruzzi at approximately 200 metres above sea level. Its south-east-facing site has clay-loam soil that is sandy in places and contains a substantial stony component. Pergola abruzzese plantings have a density of 1,600 vines per hectare, while single-cordon rows with very short pruning reach 5,000 vines per hectare. Production is restricted to approximately 80 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
100% Montepulciano.
Vinification
Grapes are hand-picked and transported in boxes, normally during the first ten days of October once suitable phenolic maturity has been reached. The fruit is destemmed, lightly crushed and fermented in stainless-steel tanks at 27–29°C for 12–14 days. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 12–14 months, partly in large wooden vessels and partly in smaller ones. After bottling, the wine rests for approximately six to eight months in a temperature-controlled environment.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with purple highlights. The generous bouquet combines black cherry, liquorice and spices. The palate is complex, with freshness and tannins held in balance.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18°C in a large, broad-bowled glass that allows the wine to oxygenate. Pair with rare-cooked red meat, game birds or mature cheese.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2015. Centovie takes its name from a place overlooking Gran Sasso that inspired the Bernetti family’s project to interpret the territory and its principal grape varieties. This wine represents the estate’s interpretation of Montepulciano’s characteristic personality and strength.
