Storia
Early 1990s: vineyard establishment
International grape varieties were planted at Collemezzano in the early 1990s. The present vineyard covers 5 ha.
2001: the Biserno Project
The wider Biserno Project began in Bibbona in 2001. Brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori and their nephew Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi recognised the viticultural potential of the territory and began studying it parcel by parcel. This work eventually resulted in three distinct estates: Tenuta di Biserno, Campo di Sasso and Collemezzano.
2019: integration into Tenuta di Biserno
The Collemezzano property became part of Tenuta di Biserno in 2019. Its existing vineyards were retained as the basis of the estate project.
Recent development as a cru
The decision to manage the 5 ha vineyard as a cru is recent. Production is limited to the best vintages and depends on meticulous selection in the vineyard, with the objective of expressing the character of this single site.
Terroir
Tenuta Collemezzano lies in Alta Maremma within the municipality of Bibbona, approximately 10 km north of the town and north of the historic village of Bolgheri. The vineyard occupies elevations between 80 and 120 m above sea level and has a south-western exposure with a view toward the sea.
The soil is clay-sandy and contains abundant coarse material formed by small alluvial pebbles. Pebbles, sand, silt and clay occur in a balanced combination, accompanied by mineral components. This structure provides excellent drainage.
The combination of elevation, south-western exposure, maritime outlook and heterogeneous, mineral-bearing alluvial soil defines the site selected for cru management.
Vinificazione
The 5 ha vineyard is managed as a cru. Fruit undergoes meticulous selection in the vineyard, and production proceeds only in vintages considered suitable for expressing the site. The vineyard work is therefore organised around selective use of the crop rather than automatic production every year.
Selected grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Maceration on the skins lasts 3–4 weeks. The wine then matures for 12–16 months in French-oak barriques, a portion of which are new, followed by at least 12 months of additional ageing in bottle.
Filosofia
The Collemezzano project is centred on precision, depth and fidelity to its place of origin. Its cru approach follows the parcel-by-parcel research that shaped the wider Biserno Project: an individual vineyard is treated as a distinct expression rather than absorbed into a broader estate identity.
Selection is fundamental to this approach. The crop is chosen meticulously in the vineyard, and production is confined to the best vintages. The intended result is an exact expression of Collemezzano’s exposure, elevation and mineral-bearing alluvial soils, with elegance and delicacy taking precedence over regular annual output.
