Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the estate’s Vie di Romans and Vieris vineyards in Friuli Isonzo Rive Alte. The vines stand at 31 metres above sea level in well-drained alluvial soils of sand, gravel and clay. They average 18 years of age, with a planting density of 6,000 vines/ha and yields limited to 800 g per vine.
Winds from the continent and the Adriatic create a changeable climate in which the grapes ripen slowly. The estate uses organic methods, without pesticides or chemical fertilisers.
Grapes
Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are blended in equal proportions.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand in early September, then destemmed and gently pressed. Cold maceration takes place at 8 °C, followed by fermentation for 28 days at 16–19 °C.
Ageing
The wine rests on its lees for 10 months in barriques, including some new oak, followed by 18–20 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Rich and complex, with an elegant, intriguing aroma. The palate is soft and rounded, with a balanced character.
Label / history
The estate’s name means “road of the Romans”, recalling a road that once crossed the Isonzo River valley and linked Rome with an Adriatic port. The Gallo family has managed the estate for more than a century. Gianfranco Gallo inherited it from his father as a teenager in the 1970s. A long-term programme to improve its winemaking began in the 1980s, seeking balanced conditions for each vineyard while respecting its individual characteristics.
