Organic conversion
Villa al Cortile forms part of the Piccini family's estate portfolio, whose vineyards have followed an organic regime since the 2018 vintage.
By 2021 — The Montalcino estate
By February 2021, Villa al Cortile was established within the family's five-estate wine project. Its identity was already centered on Montalcino, Brunello and Sangiovese. Simplicity, balance and harmony governed its approach, with quality placed before quantity and the character of each vineyard and vintage treated as central to the resulting wines.
2023 — Generazione Vigneti
In 2023, the Piccini family brought its agricultural estates together under the Generazione Vigneti identity. Villa al Cortile became the Montalcino component of a project built around the principle of pairing one representative grape variety with one territory. Leadership passed to fifth-generation family members Ginevra, Benedetta and Michelangelo Piccini, supported on the technical side by oenologists Alessandro Barabesi and Pasquale Presutto.
Generazione Vigneti combined ecological vineyard management with a renewed emphasis on territorial identity, innovation and experimentation. Within that framework, Villa al Cortile represents the relationship between Sangiovese and Montalcino.
Present vineyard configuration
Villa al Cortile currently comprises 5 hectares on the southern slopes of Montalcino. The vineyards are divided among three settings: 2 hectares in the valley between Torrenieri and Cerretalto, 2 hectares on the slopes of Torrenieri and a final hectare at higher elevation facing Monte Amiata.
Terroir
Southern Montalcino
Villa al Cortile extends along the southern slopes of Montalcino. Its 5 hectares occupy three settings within the denomination, spanning elevations from 220 to 370 metres.
Torrenieri–Cerretalto valley
Two hectares lie at 220 metres in the valley between Torrenieri and Cerretalto. The soils form a mosaic of sand and clay. This combination is associated with depth while preserving freshness and elegance.
Torrenieri slopes
A further 2 hectares occupy the slopes of Torrenieri at 270 metres. Their limestone-and-clay soils give the wines structure and complexity.
High-elevation site facing Monte Amiata
The final hectare rises to 370 metres and faces Monte Amiata. The mountain is an ancient volcano whose mineral influence has shaped the surrounding land over the centuries. In this higher setting, Sangiovese develops a vigorous, vibrant expression associated with power and depth.
Sunlight and temperature
The vineyards receive the Tuscan sun along Montalcino's southern side. Early-morning sunlight eases the cold accumulated overnight, contributing finesse and depth to the fruit.
Vinificazione
The estate vineyards are managed organically, within the organic regime adopted across the Piccini family's five-estate project from the 2018 vintage. The vineyard strategy centers on Sangiovese as the variety chosen to interpret Montalcino, following the Generazione Vigneti principle of matching one grape variety with one territory.
Production is governed by simplicity, balance and harmony, with quality placed before quantity. The objective is to preserve the distinguishing characteristics of each vintage and vineyard while emphasizing the identity of Sangiovese in Montalcino.
Filosofia
Villa al Cortile's approach rests on simplicity, balance and harmony. Quality takes precedence over quantity, while individual vineyard conditions and vintage variation are intended to remain recognizable in the wines.
The estate's work centers on Sangiovese and its relationship with Montalcino. This aligns with the broader Generazione Vigneti principle of linking one representative grape variety to one territory. The project treats terroir as the primary point of reference and combines that focus with ecological vineyard management.
Under the fifth generation of the Piccini family, the direction also embraces innovation and experimentation. These elements are presented as tools for strengthening territorial expression rather than replacing it.
