About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Lagrein is grown at 200 m above sea level on warm, open sites above the town of Besenello, beginning at the Rio Secco. The vines were planted in 1980 in slightly clayey, poorly drained gravel soils. Lagrein has been cultivated in Trentino for at least 500 years, as recorded in a decree issued by Michel Geismar in 1526.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in early October. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with regular pumping over. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels.
Ageing
After malolactic fermentation the wine is aged in barriques for several months before bottling.
Label / history
The "Heredia" range takes its name from the Latin "heredium", a plot of land granted for special merit and passed down through generations; more broadly, it was a unit of measurement in the agriculture of an ancient civilization. Cantina Sociale di Trento chose the name to keep this heritage alive and to stress the link between its wines, the land and its traditions, and aims to create more complex wines under it. The wine is named with its Trentino origin in view: wines were once often named after the grape rather than the place, overlooking that even an excellent vine cannot give quality wine in unsuitable conditions, so the winery wanted to emphasize that the grapes are grown in Trentino.
