About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in Trentino on small hillside plots at 300 to 450 m above sea level. The vines are more than 10 years old and stand mostly on south- and southwest-facing slopes. Soils are predominantly limestone, of medium texture and fertility.
Grapes
Several clones are used, mainly 777.
Vinification
Harvest begins in September and the grapes are picked by hand. They are destemmed at the winery. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks at 25 to 27 °C. The skins are kept submerged by regular punching down as they rise to the surface, which helps extract aromas and soft tannins. After alcoholic fermentation the wine goes into small wooden barrels for malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine is aged in barriques of different ages and made from different types of wood. The lots are then blended, placed in a stainless steel tank and prepared for bottling.
Label / history
"Heredia" comes from the Latin "heredium", a piece of land granted for special merit and passed down through the family. The word also named a unit of land measurement in agriculture in the ancient world. Cantina Sociale di Trento chose the name to preserve this legacy and to express the close connection between its wines, the land and local traditions. The name also reflects the aim of making wines of greater complexity. The winery also stresses that the grapes are grown in Trentino, because a wine's quality depends on the conditions where the vine is grown.
