About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Pinot Grigio comes from the vineyards of Tenuta Corte Giacobbe, an estate owned by the Dal Cero family. They lie in the hills of the commune of Roncà, on the slopes of two extinct volcanoes, Calvarina and Crocetta, planted at 500 metres above sea level. The volcanic soils are rich in minerals and consist of lava and tuff formed by eruptions in the Miocene epoch, around 40 million years ago; they give the wine a mineral character. The climate is moderate, with marked differences between day and night temperatures, and air currents from the Alps create favourable conditions for ripening. The company follows a philosophy of minimising its impact on the environment.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand in the last week of August. After careful sorting they are destemmed and macerated on the skins for 12 hours, which gives the wine its copper hue. From this point the process is the traditional one for white wines, so Ramato wines count as white despite their colour. The grapes are pressed gently and the must is left to settle. Fermentation takes place at a controlled 13 °C with cultured yeast.
Ageing
The wine rests on its fine lees for at least 3 months in stainless steel tanks, with weekly bâtonnage. After bottling it spends a minimum of 45 days in bottle.
Tasting profile
An elegant dry white of pink-copper colour, with a mineral character.
Label / history
"Ramato" means "copper-coloured" in Italian, which the name reflects.
