About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Riserva comes from a 1.1 ha vineyard in La Morra, planted in 2005 and trained to Guyot. Its south-to-southeast-facing vines stand at 300–350 m on alkaline to subalkaline silty-clay soil with very little organic matter. The Nebbiolo material comprises CVT 71, 423 and CVT CN 142 clones.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
For the 2008 vintage, fermentation lasted 28 days under controlled temperature, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs. Across the estate, fruit is harvested by hand, immediately taken to the cellar, carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts; after pressing and a coarse racking, spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel. Barolo is bottled without filtration.
Ageing
The 2008 spent its first year in barriques, divided between 60% new and 40% used wood. It was then transferred to a large oak vat for two years and subsequently held in stainless steel for another 22 months. Bottle maturation lasted 30 months before release.
Technical data
The 2008 yielded 40 q/ha and reached 14.5% alcohol. Production comprised 4,490 standard bottles, 270 magnums and 49 double magnums.
Tasting profile
Deep garnet with a light orange rim. The restrained, elegant bouquet combines dried flowers, aromatic herbs, spice and red fruit. These aromas carry onto a complex palate where silky tannins, pronounced acidity and savoury character lead into a long, mineral finish. The style emphasizes finesse and longevity.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 17–18°C. Cellaring potential is 15–20 years.
