About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Case Nere is a 1.1 ha vineyard in La Morra, trained to Guyot and facing southeast at 300–350 m. Its subalkaline silty-clay soil is very poor in organic matter and includes distinct clay patches. The detailed vineyard description identifies 20% of the vines as 60 years old and 80% as 14 years old. Nebbiolo clones are CVT CN 142, CVT 71 and CVT 141.
Grapes
100% Nebbiolo.
Vinification
The 2017 underwent 20 days of fermentation at controlled temperature, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs, followed by further post-fermentation maceration on the skins. Across the estate, fruit is picked by hand, delivered immediately to the cellar, carefully sorted, destemmed and crushed. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts. After pressing and a coarse racking, spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurs in stainless steel. Barolo is bottled without filtration.
Ageing
The 2017 matured for 30 months in used French oak barrels before transfer to stainless steel.
Technical data
The 2017 yielded 45 q/ha and reached 15% alcohol. Production comprised 2,400 standard bottles, 100 magnums and 24 double magnums.
Tasting profile
Bright ruby in colour. The aromatic profile combines red fruit, liquorice and mineral nuances. The palate is classically structured and notably dense, with clearly defined yet fine, agreeable tannins. Despite its substance, the vintage retains finesse and elegance. The clay-rich part of the site contributes robust structure, while the other soil patches support freshness, balance and aromatic lift.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 17–18°C. Cellaring potential is 12–15 years.
