History
Founding
Fuori Mondo is a small boutique winery in Tuscany, founded by Olivier, the son of Italian immigrants living in Belgium. Olivier spent much of his life defending citizens' rights in the European Parliament. In 2009 he decided to make a dramatic change and turned to winemaking, choosing what is probably one of Tuscany's smallest wineries. The winery is located in Maremma, south of Bolgheri. Olivier's vineyards were certified organic in 2015, and he is now working toward biodynamic viticulture.
The Legend of Volpaiole
According to the estate's own legend, Liliana taught people the words of two related languages with her gentle voice, while Armin laid roads and built bridges between them. She came from a land of nameless borders, and he from a part of the world where lakes reflect the silvery peaks above them. In the twilight of their lives, they settled in a forgotten place that still belonged to the Lord of the Winds, who had covered the hills with oaks and cedars and let fox, wild boar and jay live together in peace.
When Armin and Liliana arrived one warm summer night, the Wind, afraid the forgotten paradise would again be disturbed by humankind, tried to drive them away with storms, as he had done to people a thousand years before. The gusts scattered the clouds and revealed the Moon Queen, who leaned kindly over the couple, bathed them in her light, and told the Wind she loved these people because they loved each other. Armin and Liliana became guardians of the valley, protected by Wind and Moon alike.
Over the years, Armin and Liliana planted the finest young vines they could grow, tending and listening to them. Those who tasted the wine they made recognized in it a gust of wind followed by the sweetness of moonlight.
One morning, while wandering through Tuscany in search of wisdom, Olivier knocked at the gates of Volpaiole, at the other end of the world. Liliana and Armin taught him to read the Moon, understand the wind and love the vine, reawakening a love that had left his heart. Olivier decided to bring this wine out into the world and share it with those who had forgotten its virtues.
Terroir
The winery is located in Maremma, south of Bolgheri, in Tuscany. According to the estate's legend, the site is a valley once forgotten by everyone and belonging to the "Lord of the Winds," with hills covered in oaks and cedars that shelter fox, wild boar and jay.
Winemaking
Olivier's vineyards were certified organic in 2015, and he is now working toward biodynamic viticulture.
The estate's legend describes its wine as carrying the character of the place: those who taste it recognize "a gust of wind followed by the sweetness of moonlight."
Philosophy
The estate frames its work through the legend of Volpaiole: love, patience and attentiveness to the vine, the wind and the moon. Olivier describes his aim as bringing this wine out into the world and sharing it with those who had forgotten its virtues, after a love for winemaking that had left him "began to echo in his heart again."
