About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

A small selection from Crichët Pajé, within the historic Pajé vineyard in the centre of Barbaresco. The Roagna family has owned Pajé since 1953. This natural amphitheatre lies at an average elevation of 230 m, faces south and south-west, and is sheltered by the surrounding hills while remaining open to the moderating influence of the Tanaro valley.

The soils are calcareous marl with a high proportion of active limestone, reaching an especially high concentration in Crichët Pajé. They originated through marine sedimentation during the Tertiary period, approximately 70 million years ago. Pajé contains 1.83 ha of Nebbiolo, while Dolcetto occupies its lower section; its vines average more than 50 years of age.

Grapes

Nebbiolo from old vines.

Vinification

Submerged-cap maceration lasts 80–90 days.

Ageing

Very long maturation takes place in oak casks, concrete and ceramic. The Crichët Pajé selection remains in the cellar for at least an additional decade and is released 18 years after harvest.

Technical data

Production is limited to no more than a few hundred bottles.

Vintage notes

The vintage presented is 2004.
