Sforzato di Valtellina/Sfursat di Valtellina
Detto anche Sfursat di Valtellina
4 cantine e 9 vini. The Valtellina, north of Lake Como in the province of Sondrio, runs east to west, so its northern side, on the right bank of the Adda, faces fully south. The Rhaetian Alps, with peaks above 3,000 and 4,000 metres, protect it from the north; the Orobie close it to the south like an amphitheatre; and the lake tempers it from the south-west. Vineyards climb the Rhaetian slope from 300 to 700 metres on narrow terraces, where the mass of stone and rock stores the day's heat and widens the gap between day and night. Rain averages 850 mm, the air stays dry and there is constant wind. Continua a leggere ↓

Sforzato di Valtellina in breve
Sforzato — Sfursat in dialect — is the valley's dried-grape red. It must be at least 90 per cent Nebbiolo, known here as Chiavennasca, from grapes laid out to dry after the harvest, with no more than eight tonnes of fresh grapes a hectare set aside for it and at most 40 hectolitres of wine a hectare made from them.
The wine ages at least 20 months, twelve of them in wooden casks, counted from the first of April of the year after the harvest. Sforzato was recognised within the Valtellina DOC in 1968 and became a DOCG in its own right in 2003.
