Franciacorta
14 cantine e 122 vini. Franciacorta lies in the province of Brescia between the southern shore of Lake Iseo, the river Oglio to the west, Monte Orfano to the south and the hills of Rodengo, Ome, Gussago and Cellatica to the east. The whole area is a great amphitheatre of moraines left by the glacier that once came down the Valcamonica, so most of its soils were carried here from elsewhere: moderately deep, well drained, good at holding water. A zoning study in the 1990s still found six distinct kinds of ground inside it — and that variety is what the art of the cuvée, blending base wines from different plots, is built on. The climate is insubric, softened by the lake. Continua a leggere ↓

Franciacorta in breve
Franciacorta is made only by second fermentation in the bottle. The grapes are Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, with up to half Pinot Bianco; a Rosé needs at least a quarter Pinot Nero, and Satèn, the gentler white style, may not use Pinot Nero at all. Vineyards stay below 550 metres and yield no more than ten tonnes a hectare.
The time on the lees is what the rules care most about: at least 18 months for Franciacorta, 24 for Rosé and Satèn, 30 for a vintage wine and 60 for a Riserva. Franciacorta became a DOC in 1967 and a DOCG in 1995.
