Storia
The villa and the Marion family
Azienda Agricola Marion is based in a 15th-century villa near Verona that belonged to the noble Marion family for many years.
Stefano Campedelli (1988–1999)
Stefano Campedelli bought the property in 1988, restored the villa, brought the estate back into good order and planted a small vineyard. After consulting the oenologist Celestino Gaspari, he decided in 1996 to establish a winery. His wife and his brother joined the family business. The first wine with the Marion label reached the market three years later, in 1999.
Today
The estate produces up to 40,000 bottles a year.
Terroir
The estate lies in an environmentally unspoiled part of Veneto's Marcellise Valley, near Verona, where soil and climate are well suited to growing grapes. The 6-hectare vineyard sits on a southeast-facing hillside with stony clay-limestone soils. This position protects the vines from cold winds and gives them plenty of sunlight.
Vinificazione
The family pays particular attention to the vineyard, holding that good wine can only come from good grapes. Only native red grape varieties are grown, apart from Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyard work aims to preserve the natural balance of the ecosystem as much as possible: organic fertilizers are used once every four years, and the grass cover between the rows is retained when the soil is worked.
The Campedelli family closely oversees every stage of production. Celestino Gaspari, the consulting oenologist, contributes to the quality of the wines. Production is up to 40,000 bottles a year.
Filosofia
The Campedelli family describes its approach to winemaking as careful yet practical, with close oversight of every stage of production. It holds that good wine can only come from good grapes, and works the vineyard to preserve the ecosystem's natural balance as much as possible. The wines are described as bringing together power, juiciness, generosity and finesse, with a clear sense of terroir and a distinctive, recognizable taste.
