Storia
Development in Bucchianico
The Campagnola family extended its estate activity to Abruzzo and established Podere Frontino in the hills of Bucchianico, a small municipality in the province of Chieti. The project was built around 6 hectares of hillside vineyards devoted to Montepulciano grapes and the production of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC. The vineyards have an average age of approximately 10 years.
2020 vintage: organic Montepulciano
The 2020 vintage marked the introduction of a certified-organic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC under the Podere Frontino name. The development formed part of the Campagnola family’s longer-term environmental program across its private estates, based on certified organic vineyard management and inputs of natural origin. The organic release was highlighted in the family’s sustainability communication of 12 December 2022.
Terroir
Podere Frontino lies in the sunny hills of Bucchianico, in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. Its 6 hectares of hillside vineyards stand at approximately 280 metres above sea level and have a north–south exposure.
The soils are medium-calcareous clay. Marked temperature variations create conditions conducive to grape ripening and encourage the accumulation of aromatic and polyphenolic compounds in the bunches, contributing to balanced fruit.
Vinificazione
The vineyards are managed under certified organic cultivation. The broader environmental program applied to the Campagnola family’s private estates is based on products of natural origin, with the stated aims of respecting the environment, biodiversity and the wider ecosystem.
The Montepulciano vines are trained to Guyot at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. Production is managed through low, selected yields, and the grapes destined for the documented Montepulciano DOC and Riserva expressions are picked by hand. Certified-organic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC entered the range with the 2020 vintage.
Filosofia
Podere Frontino is conceived as an expression of the potential of the Teatino area through Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Its stated priorities are quality and the careful development of the territory’s potential.
The environmental approach combines certified organic farming with products of natural origin. Within the Campagnola family’s broader estate philosophy, grape growing is intended to enhance individual terroirs while safeguarding the land, biodiversity and ecosystem for future generations.
