Storia
The Comtesse Lafond in the 19th century
During the 19th century, Comtesse Lafond worked to enhance the reputation of her family's wines and châteaux. The Lafond family defended French winegrowing traditions and associated its Champagnes with inherited expertise and passion.
Her portrait was painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873), whose sitters also included Queen Victoria, Empress Elisabeth of Austria and members of numerous European royal families. The painting now hangs in the principal salons of Château Comtesse Lafond.
A family name for the Champagne house
Comtesse Lafond was an ancestor of Baron Patrick de Ladoucette and, more precisely, his great-great-grandmother. Her name was placed on the house's prestige cuvées to perpetuate the ideals of quality and elegance associated with her. It was also given to the château at the upper end of Avenue de Champagne in Épernay.
Revival of Château Comtesse Lafond
Baron Patrick de Ladoucette subsequently brought the historic château back to life, linking the preservation of this architectural heritage with the presentation of the house's Champagnes. The property now encompasses the château, the Cave Comtesse, the Caveau du Château and a showroom-boutique. Its cellars are intended to provide conditions in which the cuvées can develop and express their aromatic qualities.
Terroir
Champagne Comtesse Lafond is based at 79 Avenue de Champagne in Épernay. Château Comtesse Lafond occupies a position at the upper end of the avenue. The visitor experience introduces the diversity and complexity of Champagne's terroirs and grape varieties, but no individual vineyard locations, elevations, exposures, climatic influences, soil profiles or geological formations are identified.
Vinificazione
The cellars of Château Comtesse Lafond provide the setting in which the house seeks to develop and express the aromatic qualities of its cuvées. The estate distinguishes several cellar and hospitality spaces, including the Cave Comtesse and the Caveau du Château. No further technical sequence—from grape reception and pressing through fermentation, maturation, blending, secondary fermentation, lees ageing, disgorgement or dosage—is described.
Filosofia
Champagne Comtesse Lafond frames its identity around quality, elegance, family continuity and the defence of French winegrowing traditions. The Comtesse's name links the contemporary house to an inherited culture of expertise and passion, while Baron Patrick de Ladoucette's revival of the château reflects an explicit attachment to both wine and architectural heritage. The house characterizes its Champagne range—from Extra Brut to Rosé—through finesse and character and treats the château and its cellars as integral parts of the cuvées' presentation and expression.
