Storia
1980s
Lionello Marchesi, a Milanese entrepreneur and industrialist, decided to devote himself to winemaking and acquired three Tuscan estates: ColdiSole, Castello di Monastero and Poggio alle Sughere.
1997
Marchesi completed the purchase of the ColdiSole estate and invested heavily in it, upgrading the equipment and purchasing new French oak barrels. The estate's first vintage, made that same year, caused a sensation and was recognized as one of the best vintages of the century.
2001–2003
Poggio alle Sughere, located in Morellino di Scansano, was acquired by Lionello Marchesi in 2001. After the equipment and production line were modernized, the first vintage was released in 2002. One year later, in 2003, a new wine called Splendido was introduced, made from a unique blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
Terroir
ColdiSole lies southeast of Montalcino. Castello di Monastero is located in the Chianti Classico and Chianti Superiore zones, with vineyards covering 68 ha planted on slate and clay soils. Poggio alle Sughere is located in the Morellino di Scansano appellation.
Vinificazione
At Castello di Monastero, vineyards are planted on slate and clay soils across 68 ha, with Sangiovese as the main variety alongside Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc.
At ColdiSole, Marchesi invested heavily after the 1997 purchase, upgrading the equipment and purchasing new French oak barrels for aging. At Poggio alle Sughere, the equipment and production line were modernized following the 2001 acquisition, ahead of the first vintage release in 2002. In 2003, Poggio alle Sughere introduced Splendido, made from a unique blend of Sangiovese and Merlot.
