Vineyard and terroir
Colle Grimaldesco comes from a Montefalco cru planted in 1998 at 390 m a.s.l. The Guyot-trained vines grow at 4,500 plants per hectare in loose, silty-clay soil with river stones. The technical sheet gives an east-to-southeast exposure, while the wine page summarizes it as southeast. Yield is 40 quintals per hectare. The site promotes complete ripening while retaining balance in the finished wine.
Grapes
100% Sagrantino, the native red variety of Montefalco.
Vinification
Skin maceration lasts for more than one month.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least 36 months in large French-oak barrels and receives a further 12 months in bottle. It is not released until at least four years after the harvest.
Technical data
Production is approximately 6,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Powerful yet balanced, with elegant richness, a seductive profile and substantial potential for evolution. It is presented as a particularly direct expression of Sagrantino, its vineyard and the Montefalco territory.
Serving and pairing
Pair with veal cheek braised in Sagrantino.
Label / history
Colle Grimaldesco was Tabarrini’s first Sagrantino and the wine that initially brought attention to Giampaolo Tabarrini’s work. It remains closely identified with its slope and cru.
