Expansion into Umbria

In the late 1990s, the Cecchi family expanded beyond Tuscany and acquired Tenuta Alzatura in Montefalco, Umbria. The property was selected for its suitability to the region’s native grape varieties and became the Umbrian component of the family’s fourth-generation development across historically important winegrowing territories.

The project developed around the family’s own Umbrian vineyards and the objective of promoting the identity of Montefalco. Sagrantino became central to the estate’s work, while Trebbiano Spoletino broadened its interpretation of the territory through white wine. The estate’s wines were organized under the La Campana name and conceived as contemporary interpretations of native Umbrian varieties.

Organic conversion

In 2021, conversion of the Tenuta Alzatura vineyards to organic farming was completed. The estate consequently entered the next phase of its development with certified production principles centered on native varieties, territorial expression and reduced environmental impact.

Tenuta Alzatura is located at Montefalco in Umbria. The property was chosen as an especially suitable place for the region’s native grape varieties.

Montefalco’s winegrowing identity is defined by the close relationship among nature, land and viticulture, supported by centuries of local history and winemaking knowledge. Within this setting, Tenuta Alzatura focuses particularly on Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino: the former provides structure and complexity, while the latter supports a fresher expression of the territory’s versatility.

Tenuta Alzatura’s vineyards completed their conversion to organic farming in 2021. The transition forms part of a broader commitment to lowering environmental impact, conserving natural resources and protecting agricultural landscapes.

The estate’s viticultural direction centers on native Umbrian varieties and vineyard care intended to preserve the connection between grape and place. During the rainy spring of the 2020 season, work in the Sagrantino vineyards concentrated on maintaining airflow around the vines. In the dry 2022 season, healthy, intact grapes required comparatively few vineyard interventions.

Tenuta Alzatura is conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Montefalco founded on native Umbrian grape varieties. Its purpose is to enhance the identity of Sagrantino and Trebbiano Spoletino while expressing the structure, complexity, freshness and versatility associated with the territory.

The approach combines respect for inherited regional wine culture with continued agronomic development. Organic conversion, completed in 2021, places environmental responsibility alongside vineyard care and territorial expression.
